Fethiye is a fishing port, marina and
working town. It supports a considerable
population and offers a good mix of tourist
amenities and authentic Turkish atmosphere.
Most of the interest lies in the waterfront
area, where there is a ½-mile-long quay for
evening strolls and a small green park.
Wooden sailing ships lie at anchor here,
with another part reserved for fishing
vessels and the marina for luxury yachts and
cruisers. There is plenty for the historian
in the labyrinth of narrow, attractive,
cobbled streets dotted with carved stone
sarcophagi, while in the cliffs above are
temple façades, hewn from the living rock;
these are the tombs of the Lycians, who
lived here in the 4th century BC. The town
has a lively, busy atmosphere, with plenty
to keep most visitors occupied. Fethiye best
suits those with a preference for a town
base, a scenic harbour, authentic atmosphere
and plenty of history. It is popular with
sailing enthusiasts.
